It is best to keep all the information in your head to avoid taking too many reference books. But, this is not possible so, you should choose carefully. They should be clear, accurate, with the fresh information, not too detailed but, not too abridged either and of the size convenient to carry around.

Maps
Your choice will dictate your journey. If you decide to only visit towns, car maps should be enough. For the big cities you will need their maps, too. But, if you’re attracted to the nature, don’t go without a geography map or without a popular, “military” one.

A book of hostels
There’s no such thing in our country. But, most of other countries, especially the developed ones, edit not only the ones for their country but for the whole continent or even for the whole world. You can get the editions like these in Hungary (Budapest). If you’re one of the lucky owners of the international credit card, you can buy them on the Internet.

A book of mountain homes
I know something like this once existed here but I don’t know if it still does.

A book of the camping sites
Another important thing that our country needs. In other countries you can probably get it for free or very cheap.

Timetable, bus lines, city-guides, etc.
They are usually of a small size so it won’t hurt you to get them.

A notebook and a pencil
Sometimes they can mean “life or death” to you.
